Froggy Bottom Model J Jumbo Guitar
Sometimes referred to as the “Froggy Bottom Special,” the Model J was our earliest Jumbo model, first built in 1972. A true Jumbo guitar with a 17” lower bout and 14-frets clear of the body, our Model J is a guitar that can be pushed and performs well in lower altered tunings. The Froggy J has a shallow body and a longer scale than our Model G guitars. It’s a favorite of jazz players looking for a flat-top guitar and flat-pickers looking to expoit the more refined focus and balance of the J, as opposed to the more traditional dreadnought.
“My Froggy J was built for me as a flat-picking instrument. At the time, I was playing in string bands and doing a lot of lead-style playing, accompaniments, and solos. The J was designed to really punch through and has the fairly long 25.5” scale. Michael decided to do something that, up to that point I don’t think he’d ever done, in terms of how much arch he gave the back. It is also has a really shallow body. It was quite the instrument. That guitar was on the road with me for 10 or 12 years. If I were to start doing more flat-picking again, I’d use that guitar in a heartbeat.”
